(WCBD) - The Ninth Circuit Solicitor's Office on Monday announced that a North Charleston man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a 2020 shooting at a North Charleston mobile home park.

Alonza Marable Jr. was found guilty of murder and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature last week following a jury trial.

The charges stem from an April 18, 2020 shooting at the Ferndale Mobile Home Park.

According to the Solicitor's Office, Marable and his then-15-year-old accomplice drove around the park waiting for their victim to return home.

The two shot and killed 16-year-old Lanelle Reed Jr. outside of his home.

The juvenile, armed with a handgun, was likely the one that fired the shot that killed Reed. Marable was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and fired 12 rounds, one of which struck a bystander sleeping in a nearby home.

The bystander survived.

Assistant Solicitor Daniel Cooper, who was on the team that prosecuted the case, said that "Marable was the architect of this entire incident: he drove the car as they stalked and hunted the victim; he provided the weapons and ammunition used in the shooting, and, as he was three years older than his juvenile co-defendant, Marable clearly influenced the younger codefendant."

Marable was sentenced to 30 years in prison, the minimum sentence for murder.

Community activists want A-1 Food Store shut down after deadly shootings https://www.counton2.com/news/local-news/community-activists-want-a-1-food-store-shut-down-after-deadly-shootings/ Fri, 09 Jun 2023 20:37:58 +0000 https://www.counton2.com/?p=1335290 NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Police say one person was killed and three left injured following a Thursday night shooting outside of a convenience store along Dorchester Road.

But it's not the first time a deadly shooting happened at this location. News 2 spoke with the owner of A-1 Food Store after Thursday night’s shooting, but while he did not want to talk on camera, he said they’ve had six or seven shootings at the location in the past.

Community leaders now want something to be done to stop crime from happening in the area. In fact, the leader of a local civil rights group wants A-1 Food Store to be shut down altogether.

“This store has become a nuisance in our community. I’m working with our legal team to bring together the nuisance law to close the store,” said Elder James Johnson, CEO of the Racial Justice Network. “For the last 20 years, they’ve had the activities of people coming in this store, being shot or killed in the store.”

Johnson said violence at the store has directly impacted his organization’s former chapter president in the past.

“Her son came to the store to buy some soft drinks. He walked out of the store. He was mistaken for somebody else- someone shot and killed him at the front door of the store,” he said.

Johnson said they met with their lawyers at 1:00 p.m. to see if there was a way to shut the business down.

“The nuisance law is when so many people or activities have happened at this particular store, that we are asking that the beer and wine license and their license be revoked because of the number of crimes,” said Johnson.

News 2 obtained a report from the North Charleston Police Department which shows the number of calls for service at that specific location between March 8, 2021, and June 8, 2023.

While there were hundreds of calls for service, only approximately 19 appeared to be significant in nature including carjackings, assaults, burglaries, and thefts. There were eight calls listed as either weapons, firearms, or shooting incidents.

No arrests have been made in Thursday night's shooting as of Friday afternoon. Anyone with information is asked to contact the North Charleston Police Department.

According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Watson entered a wine bar on King Street around 10:30 p.m. and "took several paper menus from the counter, set them on fire with a lighter, and placed them under a wooden barstool." He did this several times so that the fire grew, the DOJ said.

Other people were inside the wine bar, but Watson was the only one who set the fires.

Around 11:09 p.m., Watson entered a King Street clothing store and set merchandise and clothing on fire. Another person was able to put that fire out before it got out of control.

Around 11:55 p.m., entered a paint store on Meeting Street and set a cardboard display on fire.

About an hour later, Watson entered a retail store on meeting street and lit several items on fire throughout the store.

"The fires grew rapidly and eventually burned the entire building and everything inside, resulting in the business remaining closed for several months during repairs," according to the DOJ.

Watson caused a total of $2,415,510 in damages across the four businesses.

Watson pleaded guilty to arson and was sentenced to five years in prison plus three years of court-ordered supervision. He was also ordered to pay full restitution.

Satterfield lawyers call Murdaugh's motion to vacate insurance fraud settlement "spoiled" https://www.counton2.com/the-murdaugh-investigation/satterfield-lawyers-call-murdaughs-motion-to-vacate-insurance-fraud-settlement-spoiled/ Tue, 06 Jun 2023 22:11:14 +0000 https://www.counton2.com/?p=1332047 COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Lawyers for the family of Alex Murdaugh's late housekeeper Gloria Satterfield -- who died after a fall at the family's home in 2018 -- have responded to Murdaugh's motion to vacate his confession of stealing over $4 million in insurance money meant for Satterfield's family.

Murdaugh initially told his insurance companies that Satterfield tripped over his dogs and fell down the front porch stairs. He secured over $4.3 million in wrongful death settlement funds, but funneled it all to a personal account. He later recanted on the dogs being the cause for the fall.

MORE: THE MURDAUGH INVESTIGATION

In his motion to vacate the confession, Murdaugh admitted that he lied to his insurance companies to secure a higher payout, but contends that he was not truly liable in Satterfield’s death, claiming she fell due to medical conditions and side effects of medications she was taking at the time.

Murdaugh argued that his original confession should be void because it wrongfully blamed the fall on the dogs.

The response by Satterfield's lawyers compares Murdaugh's motion to "a spoiled child... overindulged and undisciplined."

It goes on to say that his actions have "wasted this Court's time and have unnecessarily caused the further victimization of the Satterfield family."

The motion also includes several documents from around the time of Satterfield's death, including approvals of the insurance payouts. Those documents do not mention the dogs as the cause for death, so Satterfield's lawyers argue that even if Murdaugh lied about the dogs being the cause, the payouts should not be void.

Ultimately, the motion accuses Murdaugh of trying to game the judicial system to avoid paying back money he stole:

"When it served Murdaugh to parade the Confession before Courts as a sign of his magnanimousness and contrition, he did so.10 When Nautilus said in effect, 'thanks for admitting you stole the money we paid to you beneficially for the Satterfields, we would like it back now,' he reversed course and now seeks to disavow the same Confession. The goal of judicial estoppel 'is to prevent a party from playing 'fast and loose' with the courts, and to protect the essential integrity of the process.' Who has played faster or looser with the Courts than Murdaugh?"

The motion argues that the Satterfields are entitled "to sanctions against both Murdaugh and his legal counsel in order to punish their conduct and deter such similar abuses of the Plaintiffs and the legal system going forward."

(WCBD) - A 26-year-old Summerville man convicted of attempted murder of a Charleston County deputy will spend over 20 years in prison, according to First Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe.

Albert Scott III was sentenced to 24 years in prison without parole following a guilty plea to attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

He was sentenced by the Honorable Judge Heath Taylor.

On February 13, 2020, Deputy Robert Haslip attempted to make a traffic stop in the area of Ladson Road and Highway 78 when Scott failed to stop and led the deputy on a high-speed chase.

The deputy responded following a reported domestic dispute involving Scott and his girlfriend.

Scott, armed with an assault rifle, ran into a wooded area in Dorchester County after stopping his vehicle near Salters Lane. The deputy lost sight of Scott for a short time but then spotted him on the ground with his rifle raised.

"Scott then fired one shot, barely missing the deputy. Deputy Haslip told Judge Taylor during sentencing, 'I felt like I could feel the bullet pass by my head,'” the solicitor stated.

Deputy Haslip returned fire, striking Scott three times and causing him to fall to the ground.

Scott then fired another round before surrendering as additional law enforcement arrived at the scene to assist and take him into custody.

Scott was previously convicted of pointing and presenting, and accessory after the fact to armed robbery.

(WCBD) - Officials say an argument between two sisters led to an exchange of gunfire early Friday morning in North Charleston.

Jazzmen Lesston, 32, is charged with discharging a firearm into a dwelling and unlawful conduct toward a child, Charleston County jail records show.

Around 12:45 a.m., an officer with the North Charleston Police Department was responding to a call on Torgerson Avenue when he overheard gunshots near the area.

Another officer advised that a vehicle was spotted traveling at a high rate of speed and sped through a stop sign near Attaway Street toward Remount Road.

As the officer tried to catch up with the vehicle, another call was received reporting a vandalism by gunfire incident on Larry Street. The speeding vehicle then ran through a traffic signal at Remount Road and Attaway Street before making a left turn, a police report stated.

Police then caught up with the vehicle, initiated a traffic stop, and commanded the occupants to exit.

During an investigation, police observed multiple areas of the vehicle hit by gunfire with one passenger nearly struck. No weapons were found inside the vehicle or along Remount Road.

However, NCPD said marijuana; amounting to over 30 grams, was found inside the vehicle.

Police learned that Lesston and her sister were arguing over money before Lesston fired multiple shots at the home on Larry Street as she was leaving the location. Her sister then returned fire from the porch of the home toward Lesston who was inside the vehicle.

The home was struck multiple times near the front door, in close proximity to five juveniles.

Bank robbery suspect arrested after high-speed chase https://www.counton2.com/news/south-carolina-news/bank-robbery-suspect-arrested-after-high-speed-chase/ Thu, 01 Jun 2023 21:18:39 +0000 https://www.counton2.com/?p=1328325 (WSPA) - A man accused of robbing multiple banks was arrested on Thursday after leading police on a high speed chase.

Kelvin Wayne Simmons, age 53, of Concord, was arrested on charges of robbing banks in Henderson, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Rowan and Cabarrus counties.

According to the Black Mountain Police Department, officers were notified Simmons was in Black Mountain after a license plate reader flagged his car. Around the same time his car was flagged, the Buncombe County Public Safety Communications dispatched a shots fired call on State Street in Black Mountain.

Police believe Simmons had been calling dispatch centers in other counties reporting shots fired prior to initiating bank robberies.

"Black Mountain Police Department feels confident Simmons was preparing to rob a bank in Black Mountain, as he was spotted within moments of the erroneous shots fired call and the License Plate Reader alert," the department said.

When officers attempted to stop the car, Simmons reportedly released two passengers who were cooperative with police.

Simmons reportedly then led officers on a chase down Interstate 40 at speeds of over 115 miles-per-hour. During the chase, police say Simmons entered Interstate 26 travelling the wrong way and hit several vehicles before crashing.

Simmons reportedly exited the wrecked vehicle and attempted to carjack a vehicle that had stopped on the highway. Bystanders wrestled Simmons to the ground and held him until Black Mountain Police arrived and took him into custody.

Simmons has outstanding arrest warrants in Henderson, Mecklenburg, Gaston, Rowan, and Cabarrus Counties. The warrants included multiple charges including robbery with a dangerous weapon, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, flee to elude arrest, second degree kidnapping, and attempted common law robbery.

The most recent of those charges came on Wednesday, after Simmons allegedly entered a Hendersonville bank with a "Despicable Me Minions" lunchbox and told tellers he had a gun. He ran away with an undisclosed amount of money.

(WCBD) – A man arrested on drug-related charges Thursday is accused of threatening the life of a Charleston officer while en route to the detention center.

Two officers with the Charleston Police Department (CPD) were patrolling on the east side when they observed a man known to them as a drug dealer. According to a report, the man spotted the officers and “reached deep into his rectal area underneath his underwear.”

Officers said they knew from prior training and experience that this was an action consistent with someone attempting to conceal dangerous narcotics.

After approaching the subject, officers said they could smell the clear and distinct odor of marijuana coming from him. He allegedly admitted to having a “little bit of weed.”

Police recovered a plastic bag with a green leafy substance from his left pocket which they identified as marijuana.

Because of the circumstances and a prior arrest for simple possession, the suspect - 26-year-old Kendell Scott - was arrested for a second simple possession offense.

While being taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center, Scott allegedly made several derogatory and threatening statements to one of the officers and said that he already had two charges for assaulting police.

The report said Scott emphasized that the next time he saw them, he would “clap” the officers. He received an additional charge of threatening a public official.

While at the jail, police say Scott was irate and caused a disturbance. The man was thoroughly searched at the detention center, but police did not say what was found.

(WCBD) - Alex Murdaugh's longtime friend and accomplice Cory Fleming pled guilty in federal court Thursday to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

The charges stem from Fleming's involvement in a scheme to defraud the estate of Murdaugh's former housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, out of over $4,000,000 in a wrongful death settlement.

“In February 2018, Murdaugh’s housekeeper passed away after a fall at Murdaugh’s home. Murdaugh recommended that the housekeeper’s estate hire Fleming—then a personal injury and criminal defense attorney in Beaufort—to represent them and file a claim against Murdaugh to collect from his homeowner’s insurance policies. Murdaugh’s insurance companies settled the estate’s claim for $505,000 and $3,800,000,” the U.S. Attorney’s office said.

Fleming and Murdaugh are accused of misappropriating the funds, which they diverted for personal use.

He faces a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

Judge Richard Gergel told Fleming that the plea will not supersede the state case against him and that the sentences could run concurrent.

A sentencing hearing is expected at a later date.

Wanted fugitive Michael Burham captured in Berkeley County https://www.counton2.com/news/local-news/berkeley-county-news/wanted-fugitive-captured-in-huger/ Wed, 24 May 2023 21:26:52 +0000 https://www.counton2.com/?p=1322170 BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) - Authorities have captured fugitive Michael Burham after a multi-day search that spanned two Lowcountry counties.

Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis said they received a call from a resident on Wednesday afternoon after spotting Burham on their property off United Drive. Burham ran from behind a shed which ultimately led to his capture shortly after 5:15 p.m.

"Teams were very close. We were concentrating on the area. SLED, the FBI, Charleston County, bloodhounds -- they all moved in and he was taken into custody," said Sheriff Lewis.

Burham was not in great shape upon his capture after moving through sections of the Francis Marion National Forest for days. "You could tell he had been in the elements for some time," Sheriff Lewis added.

Neighbors who were watching the law enforcement activity in a rural area of the county cheered after BCSO spokeswoman Carli Drayton announced Burham was captured.

Burham was taken to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office where he will be booked and processed. He will be extradited to New York to face his charges.

Burham, who was wanted in connection to a sexual assault and homicide out of Jamestown, New York, made his way to the Lowcountry Sunday after allegedly kidnapping an elderly couple from Pennsylvania.

The couple said that he drove them to North Charleston and then let them go.

A federal arrest warrant was issued by the U.S. District Court of the Western District of New York Monday for the unlawful flight to avoid prosecution, according to the FBI.

Hundreds of law enforcement agents, including the FBI and State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) agents, assisted in the search. A $10,000 reward for his capture was offered by the FBI.

A large area of the Francis Marion National Forest in Huger was saturated Tuesday after officials encountered Burham, but he escaped.

Overnight Tuesday, a sighting was reported near Awendaw in Charleston County, so resources were shifted to that area.

On Wednesday afternoon, Berkeley County officials got a tip that a man matching Burham's description was spotted behind a home on United Drive, in the same area where officials had been searching Tuesday.

Law enforcement officials quickly moved search efforts back to Berkeley County, where Burham was taken into custody.

Sheriff: Teen fights off mom to save sister from being drowned after 2nd sister killed https://www.counton2.com/news/crime/sheriff-teen-fights-off-mom-to-save-sister-from-being-drowned-after-2nd-sister-killed/ Tue, 23 May 2023 01:10:02 +0000 https://www.counton2.com/?p=1320467 COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A mother drowned one of her daughters in their South Carolina home and was trying to kill another child when the oldest daughter was awakened by screams and managed to save her sister, a sheriff said.

Jamie Bradley Brun, 37, was charged with murder and attempted murder after the attack early Friday in their home on St. Helena Island, Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner said at a news conference.

Brun has talked to investigators and Tanner called it a horrific crime but told reporters he wouldn't say why Brun wanted to kill her children.

“I’m not a mental health expert. It’s not my job to determine if someone has a mental health problem," the sheriff said.

Brun's 16-year-old daughter was asleep around 1:30 a.m. Friday when her 8-year-old sister's screams woke her up. The sheriff wouldn’t detail how the mother was trying to drown her child, but said the girl's cries were coming from the bathroom.

The teen went into the bathroom and managed to wrestle her sister away from her mother and run to a nearby family member's house to call 911, Tanner said.

“I’m very proud of her. I think she did an unbelievable job. She defended her family when no one else was available,” Tanner said. "Her courage is amazing.”

Deputies arrived eight minutes later and found Brun and her 6-year-old daughter, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital after CPR by officers and paramedics could not revive her, investigators said.

Brun tried to grab a deputy's gun as she was arrested and officers shocked her with a Taser to take her into custody, Tanner said.

Brun was being held without bond. Jail and court records didn't indicate if she had a lawyer.

The 8-year-old did not appear to be seriously injured, and the sheriff said she and her teen sister are being cared for by other family members.

Brun had no arrest record in South Carolina and authorities had been called to the house only once about two years ago after a school employee was concerned about the mental health of one of the children, Tanner said.

"There is a lot more information that we have and a lot more details that we know but at this point we can’t share," Tanner said.
